Not so fantastic plastic

Tomorrow will see the introduction of a 5p charge for all single-use carrier bags in Wales. An initiative aimed at cutting down waste. The levy is expected to raise £2.6 Million each year which retailers would be required to hand over to charities. I noticed M&S mention that 4p from every bag will be donated.

Now, here’s the thing. The 5p charge is meant to discourage me from using carrier bags. However, if it’s going to charity, then maybe it’ll actually encourage me to buy some bags. After all, if it comes down to price alone, 5p per bag isn’t going to break the bank.

I’m excited for the charities – it’s great news. I’m just not so sure it’s aligned with the objective of distributing less bags. Maybe they should use the money elsewhere, somewhere not so emotive. Invest it into some green energy or recycling initiative for instance.

Maybe they should invest it in fabric bags. We can make them!
